From quirky and pop to minimalist: new work by Shweta Malhotra

by Radhika Kuldeep

Graphic designer and illustrator Shweta Malhotra is a young Indian designer who likes to be versatile and create on a wide variety of projects, be it through collaborations or working on new startups, designing spaces or something unique like changing the look of the city cabs, with Taxi Fabric.

Shweta, a graduate from Sophia Polytechnic (Bombay) in 2004, began her career as an Art Director at agencies like McCann Erickson, Contract Advertising and Ogilvy. She settled on a career in graphic design after a short course at Fabrica, Italy, Benetton’s Visual Arts Research Centre and has since worked with design studios like Grandmother India and Rediffusion Y&R Design.

We look at two of her recent works: one is the branding and logo design for Limon, and another is her illustration for a wall in Jabong’s office.

Limon: After coming across her Instagram feed, Aradhana Anand, the founder, contacted Shweta to work on launching Limon – a furniture brand which boasts of a range of colourful and eclectic chairs of their own. The brief for Limon was to create a mix of quirky and pop inspired, yet minimal branding. Shweta took inspiration from the first line of chairs, which experimented with textiles and indigenous accents, giving her the opportunity to come up with something complementary.

Jabong: The wall for Jabong’s office rose from her minimalistic renders of her favourite looks from various fashion weeks . This caught the eye of Guerrilla Design, who were designing the walls for Jabong’s new office space.

Guerrilla curated 6 illustrations from various international labels that Shweta had created during recent fashion weeks. They then added the 3rd dimension to them, by laser cutting boards to create some of the accessories or patterns/prints in the illustrations.

Shweta is currently a full-time freelancer and is based in Delhi, sharing an office space with Safomasi, a illustration/design startup and a few other creatives. If you are in Delhi, do drop by Chirag Dilli and meet her, while there.

You can view the rest of her portfolio here or browse through a personal year-long project where she’s created a new design everyday. Follow her on Facebook or Instagram for your daily dose of inspiration.
