Sketchnotes: Nithin Rao Kumblekar

By Payal Khandelwal

The ad executives from Mad Men, Andaaz Apna Apna’s famous character Teja, Breaking Bad’s now universally popular character Walter White and Daniel Craig and Judi Dench straight out of Skyfall. These are just some of the characters you will find if you look inside Nithin Rao Kumblekar’s sketchbook. Kumblekar has also been featured in Kyoorius Magazine‘s Illustrator Showcase.

He is not only adept at sketching celebrities but also at creating various situations populated by imaginary characters. He says, “Most of my imaginary characters will have similar expressions one way or the other. But that changes after I color them… I take my own face as a reference to get the desired expressions.”

When he starts out, his sketches are very rough with a lot of lines and he prefers beginning every work with similar scribbles. “Then I fine tune it and get a neat outline which is ready to color. But then again, there is no guarantee as I can change it while coloring as well.” He says that if the initial sketch doesn’t turn out quite well, it gets difficult to make changes after the colouring process.

He confesses though that these days he hardly does any personal work, so all his illustrations are created for his clients and he makes sure that he shares his sketches with the clients too. Unlike many illustrators, Kumblekar prefers jumping to the digital medium directly. “I do only digital works and even the sketches are created digitally. I sometimes touch the pencil but digital work is much more comfortable,” he says. He mainly uses Wacom Cintiq and Adobe Photoshop for his work.
